Iodine Deficiency During Pregnancy Affects Babies’ Development

According to a study released by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Iodine is essential to babies’ brain development.

Iodine plays an important role in regulating the body’s thyroid gland and overall metabolism (the rate at which your body uses energy.)

Recent studies show that many American women have too little iodine. If pregnant, the deficiency may affect their child’s brain
development.

A lack of iodine during pregnancy has also been linked to an increased risk of miscarriage, preterm delivery, and stillbirth.Image

Iodine is found in dairy products, eggs, vegetables, seafood (especially ocean or saltwater inhabitants), and brewer’s yeast. The amount of iodine in many types of food varies according to the amount of iodine in the area’s soil or water.

Since most of the salt consumed in the U.S. comes from processed foods, iodine is no longer a part of the common American diet, said pediatrician Dr. Jerome Paulson.

“The brain development issues are very subtle and are not likely to be noticed in an individual child,” Paulson explained.
He said children will appear to be normal but that they may not be the greatest they could be.

Paulson continued to say: “It’s an issue for society as a whole when you have a large number of children who are not reaching their full potential.”

Rest assured, even though an iodine deficiency affects a child’s brain, it isn’t likely result in a learning disability.
Nevertheless, it’s important to know the signs of an iodine deficiency— an enlarged thyroid gland, fatigue, weakness, depression, intolerance to cold, and weight gain can all result from a lack of iodine.

All women of child bearing age are encouraged to take a dose of the mineral. Pregnant women should consume 220 micrograms a day and breastfeeding moms should take up to 290 micrograms. In addition to taking iodine, women should also take vitamin D in their prenatal vitamin regimen.

The AAP, which represents 60,000 pediatricians and pediatric specialists, says women should seek out supplements that contain at least 150 micrograms of iodide. The supplement, combined with dietary intake, should bring iodine consumption to the recommended amount.

“The main thing is that the FDA [Food and Drug Administration] should make sure that prenatal vitamins contain all the essential nutrients,” Garibaldi said.

Michael Bloomberg maybe overstepping boundaries on baby formula?

Voluntarily taking part in the Latch on NYC initiative, Michael Bloomberg has hidden away formula in hospitals behind lock and key. The initiative promotes new mothers breastfeeding their babies, rather than being “pushed” to try out the latest and greatest baby formulas while in the hospital. The argument has been made that formula companies have taken over hospitals with their samples and advertising, almost forcing the decision to use formula on the new mother. The initiative gives new moms a chance to breastfeed without pressure to use anything else.

Bloomberg has gotten both praise and hate for this impulsive act, making it difficult for anyone to make a decision on how they really  feel about his choice. While he is promoting a healthy, more natural way of feeding babies, he is also taking away an option that many  new mothers would normally expect to be available for them. I’m still deciding how I feel about Bloomberg’s reaction to the Latch on NYC initiative, how about you?

3 Reasons Why she “doesn’t want a push gift”, but seriously does.

I’m SURE I’m not the only girl who’s ever said “no, really honey, I don’t need a gift” and in my head was thinking “I seriously better get a gift or he’s in real trouble!”, which I know is incredibly bipolar and completely ridiculous. I think sometimes we do it to be stoic (even though we’re not), or to try to be humble and unassuming (even though we’re far from that as well). Whatever the reason, it happens, and for guys it can be extremely hard to read. So here are a few reasons why she might mean yes while saying no.

  1. Getting gifts means you’re loved. Every woman loves getting a gift from her significant other because it’s emotional and shows her that she’s loved. This feeling can be ESPECIALLY important through a pregnancy. Women go through so many emotional roller coasters while pregnant, and at the end of the day to feel loved is the truly the most comfort in the world.
  2. Starting a tradition. One of the many things that runs through a woman’s mind when she’s pregnant is all of the things that she can now pass down to her child. The push present tradition is most likely one of them. If she receives something symbolic and memorable for her push present then she can keep it as an heirloom for her child, not to mention it will probably be the first heirloom that she has.
  3. (Just a little) Showing off. Pregnant women talk, a lot. They talk about everything including baby products, photos, nurseries, who’s who and what’s what. The push present subject does come up a lot in conversation, and she’s going to want to have something nice to talk about.

Award Winning Documentary “Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin and The Farm Midwives” gives an inside look into natural birthing.

Having made its official debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival, the in depth documentary explains the start of the natural birth movement and educates viewers on Ina May Gaskin’s quest for a completely natural birthing community. The film is comprised mostly of Gaskin’s views and ideals on natural birthing, and is somewhat controversial. So far, I’ve only seen the trailer and I’ve already been left speechless. It’s definitely eye opening to see a group of people so determined to be removed from something that they choose to live in the wilderness and survive on their own. This concept is especially scary when it comes to giving birth, my mind could only think of the one obvious question “What would happen if something went really wrong?” I mean seriously, they’re out in the middle of nowhere with no way to communicate with the rest of the world and their trusting one woman to deliver their babies, I’m not saying they’re wrong but I would totally freak out.

Anyways, watch the trailer below, and let me know what you guys think!

Our Push Present, How we feel and why we feel that way.

Over the last couple of days, I have been on the phone constantly with people discussing our brand and why we do what we do. Needless to say, most people are astonished by our views and find themselves wanting to get involved with our initiative. What is our initiative? It is to honor and commemorate every mother from every journey in every city for every child.  We want all mothers to feel the joy of receiving Juno Lucina, because it means protection and love, and it symbolizes the incredible, unique journey they’ve gone through to bring a new child into their lives. Everything we do here reflects that initiative, and we hope you feel the same way.

The Push Present; From a Mother’s Eyes.

Over the weekend I had the great opportunity to meet up with one of my friends who has been pretty much out of the picture recently, since her and her husband just had their second child. We went to a local coffee shop that we love, and chatted about almost everything. During the conversation she brought up the push present she received from her husband for their second, and how amazing that moment was. “This being our second go around with the whole pregnancy thing, I think he felt the need to make it extra special. It’s always special having a baby, I mean it’s literally incredible the whole thing. His present was incredible in a different way, in an appreciative and loving way, and I think that’s what a push present is really supposed to be.”

I asked her about her friends and family, what they thought of the gift, and if they speculated what he should have gotten her. “I’m pretty sure at least one of my family members had something to do with it, he’s talented and all, but I wouldn’t peg him for picking out something so perfect. I don’t think I could have gotten anything better than this necklace, every day it’s a beautiful reminder of the moment when I met my baby.” We continued to sit and talk about that wonderful day for her and her family. The more she brought up the necklace beautifully resting around her neck, the happier I was that I mentioned Juno Lucina to her mother 3 months prior.

The Push Present Battle…Part 2.

The Push Present Battle Part 2

I felt like I wanted to return to the battle of the push present, and address some questions that might not have been answered. Particularly: “Who is this gift not for?” This question comes up to me all of the time. I want to clear the air and let the public motherhood know that this gift is for all mothers. That’s correct, all mothers. Every new mother has gone through a journey, some have natural childbirth, some have cesarean, some adopt, some use a surrogate, ect. Each journey is unique and special, and we commemorate all journeys.

Secondly, we already touched base on the “push present” term, but I wanted to say a few words on it again. We all know it’s awkward and it can cause some discomfort. Juno Lucina did not create this term, it was first documented in 1992 and has grown ever since on its own. The gift that we have created is for all mothers in all journeys. That’s what our passion is, and that’s what our company is all about.

On that note, let’s keep celebrating the mothers we love!

Why we developed the Push Present.

Before the birth of Juno Lucina, there was no obvious choice for a push present, everything was so generic and meaningless. Our founder went through the daunting obstacle of trying to find something for his wife that she would cherish for a lifetime, and he found himself having to make to a compromise in that moment. After this experience, he set out to create the perfect push present that truly captures the emotion and appreciation of this very unique moment in a woman’s life. Juno Lucina took form with three main collections, all inspired by the ancient tradition of the Roman Goddess of Childbirth who was invoked to protect new mothers through pregnancy and birth. Each gift is presented inside of a luxury gift box inscribed with a poem of love and appreciation.
Everything we do here at Juno Lucina is centered on new mothers and their journey. Our offices are located in the United States, and we are always available by phone to ensure that we exceed the expectations of each customer we serve. We are the only product that symbolizes the deepest meaning behind a push present, making our brand the only true option for this moment. We also have a Custom Couture service which provides a white glove service to patrons who desire our designs in a larger total carat weight. We do everything in our power to make sure that every pregnancy has the joy of receiving Juno Lucina as a moment of appreciation and commemoration, every mother deserves it.
